Time is in the mind - Harper's Bazaar

Mankind has been trying to find the key to eternal youth for centuries and has never been closer to it than now. An entire medical branch is dedicated to the slowing down of the aging process. What is the hot news of anti-aging?

The population ages. This fact is quite irrefutable because there are numbers behind it which say everything. At present, one in ten people is over sixty years old. However, experts forecast that mankind will age very quickly even in the future - they predict that in 2050, it will be already one in five people.

Anti-aging medicine is a relatively new specialization. It focuses primarily on how a person can achieve the best possible health, while at the same time slowing down the aging process as such. This medicine rejuvenates the organism from the inside and the outside, and also deals with different nuances that classical medicine does not solve. Without any disruption, the seemingly incompatible Eastern and Western worlds encounter each other in it. Do not expect any quackery. Everything is based on the latest research and facts.

"The aging of the organism begins already at the age of twenty-five years. Anti-aging medicine is primarily prevention. It is intended for all who prize their health, energy and vitality and want to keep them up to an advanced age. In order to feel good in old age, it is necessary to start working on it from youth,” MUDr. Monika Golková explains the main message of the discipline and adds: "But it's never too late to start to take care of oneself. We cannot return to the damage and degenerative changes that have occurred, but one’s state of health can be improved even at an advanced age."

In the swirl of new discoveries

When you say anti-aging, most laypeople will imagine anti-wrinkle creams, or a visit to a beauty salon or a plastic surgeon. Anti-aging medicine, however, is a comprehensive preventive approach that accepts revolutionary medical methods from detecting food intolerances and allergies, through testing hormones and brain neurotransmitters, to the latest genetics and measuring of telomere lengths. "It uses our own regenerative potential of our body and the physicians are able to prepare tailored treatment based on the results of the tests. When you are healthy, you are full of energy and look good. Although anti-wrinkle creams can beautify you, they certainly will not protect you against illness," MUDr. Monika Golková, who is the main promoter of this approach in the Czech Republic, describes the differences between cosmetics and real anti-aging. It is she who opened the first certified anti-aging clinic in Prague and thanks to her study abroad constantly brings the latest discoveries and procedures to the Czech Republic.

"Anti-aging medicine is the fastest growing medical branch and we have a whole new range of novelties. At present, for example, we are able to measure the biological age of organs by examining the ends of chromosomes, i.e. the length of the telomeres. We can also support the production of telomerase, an enzyme that protects these ends. We are able to thoroughly examine brain neurotransmitters and positively affect stress, anxiety or depression. Based on complex hormonal analyses, we create healing bio-identical, tailor-made hormonal creams."

Genetics also shows great development. Thanks to the latest discoveries, we are able to investigate not only serious genetic diseases but also to use for instance, a talent sensor. This sensor analyzes the genetically-conditioned talent of the child and helps the parents to focus on developing this innate talent. "Or we use the epigenetic sensor that doesn't focus on the gene structure but on its regulation. This way, we will find out which lifestyle can help us avoid the outbreak of a certain disease by regulating our own genes. We can test the risks of depression, burn-out syndrome and intervene preventively before a disease outbreak. And of course, we are able to test nine different aging factors in order to create an individual skin serum that will act directly on our weakest place. Someone has a big problem with wrinkles, another with loosened skin and so on, the doctor adds.

Anti-aging medicine is primarily focused on prevention. Its purpose is not meant to treat the sick, but to prevent the illness. Nevertheless, the senior consultant of the A2C Clinic has to also deal with already-ill patients: "Of course, sick people come to us in the clinic, those who have tried everywhere and nowhere got any help. Then a thorough examination is needed to solve the cause of the disease. Anti-aging also includes regenerative medicine that uses the potential of adult stem cells and the ability of the body to regenerate itself." All examinations in medicine, not just those fighting against aging, are very costly. However, since they are usually covered by health insurance, actual prices usually remain hidden to us. However, anti-aging medicine is in a different situation. It's about ten-to-fifteen years ahead of classical medicine. The tests she uses are mainly available abroad and it will take some time before they will be covered by insurance.

THE SECRET OF OUR BRAIN

Our body is one big mystery. But the greatest secrets are hidden in the brain. It is exactly this which informs us by pain about problems occurring anywhere in the organism. Thanks to the brain, we are able to sleep, talk and feel happy...

All this is caused by the so-called neurotransmitters, substances that are formed in the nervous system. They are then drained into the bloodstream and subsequently into the whole body. Figuratively said, they are the servants of the controlling central nervous system cells from which they take nerve impulses and bring them to the controlled cells of the muscles, glands or other tissues.

These controlled cells then are in command not only of our organs, but also of our mind. The most well-known neurotransmitter is dopamine, which is the source of brain energy. The feeling of happiness and good mood is ensured by serotonin and the calming of the organism is induced by GABA. The correct functioning of the memory then carries a substance called acetylcholine. There are more neurotransmitters. If there is an imbalance of the neurotransmitters in the body or their quantities are too low, problems arise. Most of these problems are known under the collective name of psychosomatic disorders. These include most commonly abdominal pain, headaches, fatigue or even mood disorders and a loss of the ability to concentrate. The opinion is that the imbalance of neurotransmitters is connected to burnout and mental fatigue syndrome, the onset of Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis or Alzheimer's disease," senior consultant of the A2C Anti-Aging Clinic Monika Golková explains.

The values of the neurotransmitter are assessed by a laboratory analysis of blood or urine. Based on the results, a treatment can be initiated. When you manage to restore normal neurotransmitter levels and to stabilize them, the brain will be reactivated. "This process can remotely be compared with the rebooting of a computer,” the doctor concludes.

If we think about it ..., would it not be better to visit a doctor still at the moment when we may feel good, but when we know also already what can endanger us in the future? Thanks to anti-aging medicine, we have a chance to uncover the problem long before it breaks out.
